The Pomodoro Technique- A famous strategy to improve productivity

If you had dived deep into the ways of time-management and eliminating procrastination, then you probably might have heard of the technique, Pomodoro Technique.

The Pomodoro Technique is perhaps the simplest time- managing and productivity strategy I have ever come across. It is so simple and effective that you don't need anything sophisticated- you just need a timer!

The technique was ‘invented’ in the early 1990s by developer, entrepreneur, and author Francesco Cirillo. Cirillo noticed that when faced with large tasks or a series of assignments, we’re able to be most effective if we break the work down into short, timed intervals (called “Pomodoros”) which are spaced out by short breaks.

The Pomodoro Technique

Basically, it is cyclical system in which you work for sometime, it could be almost any work you like, then you stick to that work with focus till you hear the timer ringing, then take a break, and start all over again.

It is a really simple technique, which can improve motivation, creativity, productivity and efficiency. Studies have even proved that this method is outstanding while being faced with long tasks, as it will actually help you stay focused on your task.

Procedure

  • Choose a task you would like to get done, like an assignment

  • Set your timer for 25 minutes

  • Work with focus till your timers starts ringing.

  • Take a short break for 5 minutes to rejuvenate yourself

  • That is one "pomodoro" done. After 3 more complete pomodoros, take a longer break of 15-20 minutes, for rewarding yourself.

  • If you may wish, you start the process all over again

This is just how it is normally done. The timer I had talked about was the official pomodoro timer. Of course, you could use just your normal timer on your device. I, personally use an app called "Forest" where we are not allowed to use the phone while the timer is on. It blocks most apps, which I find it as a way not to get distracted.

The work timings are, of course, flexible. But, remember do not keep the work timing too long or too short. If they are too long, you might feel less motivated and might procrastinate. If kept too long, then frequently going for breaks will be a distraction.

It is a good way to break down larger tasks, like completing long assignments into smaller and convenient periods, so that we can plan our smaller tasks and keep track of the time we have spent on that task.

The way I like to think about it is that it is similar to digesting a cookie; our body would rather digest by breaking it down into smaller pieces than taking it as it is.

Remember to take adequate breaks after one work of the "pomodoro" because studies have found that breaks can reduce or prevent stress, help to maintain performance throughout the day and reduce the need for a long recovery at the end of the day. I have a post where it talks about some interesting things you can do when you are taking a break.
